The wife of a Pretoria officer who was arrested for allegedly raping and trying to stab her with a knife has spoken out about living with domestic abuse.

The 28-year-old woman told News24 on Tuesday he had allegedly assaulted her on numerous occasions before the violence escalated.

He boasted to her that he would not be arrested.

She said she had also tried to open a case against him previously, but instead of arresting him, police apparently, "sat us down to talk and fix our issues". At the time, she said he allegedly assaulted her and broke all the windows in the house.

The woman added that there were other incidents where he would allegedly slap her after drinking but she would always let it go, until July, when she announced she would institute divorce proceedings against him. She said he had cheated on her.

Despite this, however, they continued living together until the incident on Sunday morning.

‘He forced my legs open’

She said the officer called her on Saturday night and asked if she could pick him up from work. He was working night shift. The woman said she responded by saying she was afraid to drive alone at night, but would try to find someone to accompany her.

The woman said after she failed to find someone else, she went to sleep. He arrived home in the morning and the violence started.

“He knocked and I opened the door for him and went back to bed. He got to bed and forced my legs open. He tore my panties... he started shouting... 'You were sleeping with a man. That is why you didn't want to fetch me'," the wife said.

The woman said she tried to explain she had slept alone but he refused to accept it.

“I then told him that we should go to the doctor so that they can check if there was sperm inside of me. He then fetched a knife and tried to stab me. We fought for it... He then started packing his bag and called his friend to fetch him,” she said.

On the run for two days

As he was walking out, the wife said she followed so she could close the gate but he kept on insulting her. She said he even told her to go and try to open a case but he would not be arrested.

“He said he would not be arrested just like... the last incident... I’m glad that he is behind bars. I actually don’t care what happens to him from now on,” she said.

The constable was arrested on Tuesday after being on the run for two days.

Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) spokesperson Grace Langa said the officer would be detained at the Mabopane police station until he appears in court.

Ipid is investigating a case of rape, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and attempted murder.
