The University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) has been found to produce the most alumni millionaires on the African continent, it said.

The University of Cape Town (UCT) was the only other African university on the list, Wits said in a statement.

"It is gratifying to know that, as a university at the heart of the national and continental economy, Wits continues to provide the world with a growing cohort of world class African CEOs," said its vice chancellor Prof Adam Habib.

Wits said it was ranked 57th in the world for producing the most number of alumni millionaires by the study "Smarter money: how the wealthy have been educated", compiled for Spear's Magazine.

It came in ahead of the University of Colorado (58), Brown University (63), the London Business School (64), Stanford Business School (68) and Monash University in Australia (74). UCT was ranked 79th.

Engineering was found to have produced the most millionaires, followed by an MBA, economics and law.

Wits said it was also ranked 139th on the Global Employability University Ranking, concerning graduate employability, which also found that it produced the most employable graduates in Africa.
