Worth a fortune

Despite constant criticism of Cameroonian star Samuel Eto’o’s move to Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala, he has proved he’s worth every cent billionaire Suleyman Kerimov paid for him.

The star striker celebrated his debut in the Russian Premier League with a goal to help Anzhi salvage a 1-1 draw away to Rostov.

The former Inter Milan player recently signed a three-year deal with the Russian club.

Reports from Italy suggest Anzhi paid Inter 25 million euros (R257 million) for the nimble-footed forward and he is set to earn a staggering 20,5 million euros (R212 million) after tax for three seasons.

No official figures have been released but according to media reports, the over-the-top wage has, unsurprisingly, made the 30-year-old Cameroon marksman the highest-paid player in the world.

As it stands, his wages dwarf the earnings of Lionel Messi at Barcelona and Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo. Whether or not his reported earnings are true, one thing’s for sure – Eto’o is now by far and away the best player currently in the Russian League.

Russia has been known for its unkind treatment of African players. Only time will tell if he finds the people as cold as the icy weather.
