Zanele Mbokazi becomes a makoti

THE picturesque hills of Dassenhoek fill with the sounds of ululating and jubilant singing as guests gather at the gospel TV personality and businesswoman’s homestead just outside Durban. It’s a day for umembeso (a gift-bearing ceremony) for one of the region’s most famous sisters. The gift bearer is a bishop, no less – and no detail has been overlooked to make the traditional ceremony one to remember.

Young girls dressed in Zulu garb compete in traditional dances as the elders look on, seated in a large red marquee that has been erected for the bride’s ukwembesa, a traditional ceremony where the groom’s family dress their new makoti after ilobolo has been paid. The makoti is none other than Zanele Mbokazi, the founder of the Crown Gospel Music Awards and a leader in Mzansi’s business world, and her groom is prominent Swazi bishop Mpendulo Nkambule of Word of Hope Ministries.
