Zimbabwe gets US4.1 billion budget

Zimbabwe's finance minister Patrick Chinamasa announced on Thursday a US4.1 billion budget for 2015, but admitted most of the funds will go towards paying wages for civil servants.

Amid jeers of derision from MPs, Chinamasa said 81 percent of the budget would go towards employment costs. He said only US798 million would be left to fund government operations, service debts and undertake capital development projects.

"Basically what this means is that we are paying people to sit in their offices and not to undertake operations," he said.

Zimbabwe is reeling under an external debt of more than US8 billion, making the country a poor candidate for desperately needed international credit.
