President Jacob Zuma has played Santa Claus to a large group of people at his KwaZulu-Natal homestead in Nkandla, where he handed out food, toiletries and blankets - emblazoned with his face.

According to the Sunday Times, Zuma, who spent Christmas at his home, dispensed alms to a large group of old people on Friday before urging them to ignore criticism of the spending of about R206m of taxpayers’ money on security upgrades at Nkandla.

It was however, a week’s worth of festivities, which began on Monday. The fun will end with a party for children on Sunday.

Although most people from the surrounding area came out in support of Zuma regarding the money spent on upgrading security at Nkandla, there were those who voiced displeasure over the issue, the Sunday Times reported.

Meanwhile Thembekile Ntombizamani Shangase (61) passed on tragically during the Christmas party for older persons hosted annually by Zuma.

The circumstances of the incident are still being investigated by the Ministry of Social Development.

"We extend our deepest condolences to the family and relatives on the passing of their loved one during what was meant to be a joyous occasion for our senior citizens. The Minister has assured me that the matter is being looked into," said  Zuma in a media statement.
