A hot dog is not a hot dog without tomato sauce. This #JustDelicious version of our favourite street food includes a mega-easy to make traditional homemade tomato sauce

8 Eskort Smoked Viennas

4 hot dog rolls

butter, for rolls

15ml (1T) olive oil

Caramelised onions

olive oil

2 large onions, sliced into half-moons

20ml (1?T) brown sugar

ground black pepper

Tomato sauce

2 onions, finely chopped

2 garlic cloves, finely chopped

30ml olive oil

2 cans chopped tomatoes

50g (2?T) tomato paste

10ml (2t) sugar

250ml (1c) water

  • Slice the rolls, spread with butter both sides and set aside.
  • Heat the olive oil in a pan and fry the viennas until cooked through and lightly browned. Remove from the pan and set aside.

Carmelised onions

  • Add a little more olive oil to the pan if needed and fry the onions until softened. Add the sugar, stir, and fry gently for another 8-10 minutes until golden and caramelised. Remove from the heat and set aside.

Tomato sauce

  • In another pan, fry the onions and garlic until softened. Add the tomatoes, tomato paste and sugar and simmer for 10 minutes.
  • Add the water, season with salt and pepper and simmer for 25-30 minutes, stirring often, until slightly thickened and well cooked. Remove from the heat and set aside.
  • Assemble hot dogs with 2 viennas sausages each and a generous helping of caramelised onions and tomato sauce. Serve and enjoy!
