Meet Bonolo Kgatle, DRUM’s First Grader competition winner

Tsholofelo Kgatle was bursting with pride on her daughter Bonolo’s first day of school. She chose to make the moment even more memorable by entering the PEP First Grader competition in conjunction with DRUM – and little did she know her baby girl would be voted the winner!

Ultra-cute and clad in her school uniform, Bonolo posed for pictures – an easy job because she loves posing for the camera, her mom adds with a giggle. “So these photos will be a fond memory of her love of being in pictures and, of course, her first day of school,” Tsholofelo says.

Parents were invited to send in pictures of their children entering Grade 1 and the public could vote for the kid deemed to have the biggest cute factor – and Bonolo emerged victorious.

The little girl, who comes from Johannesburg, walked away with R5 000 and won an additional R2 000 for her school, Laerskool Danie Theron in Kibler Park, Joburg.

Her proud mom says this prize could also be a stepping stone for Bonolo “because she’s photogenic and I’d love for her to be a model or an actress on TV”.

Tsholofelo says she’ll put aside some of the prize money for Bonolo’s venture into modelling and pageantry. Bonolo’s school will be holding a Miss Danie Theron pageant “and they asked for an entrance fee so I will take some of the prize money to pay for it”.

Bonolo, who also loves playing netball, says she plans on becoming a doctor “because I don’t like seeing people getting sick”.

Tsholofelo has also vowed to use some of Bonolo’s winnings to take the little girl on holiday to Durban this year. “I promised Bonolo I’d take her to the seaside.”

And Bonolo can’t wait. “I’m so happy I won the competition and I’m looking forward to the trip to Durban. I can’t wait to take pictures at the beach.”

Second prize went to Nthato Mabasa, who won R3 000

Third prize to Lisakhanya Jonas, who won R2 000.

PEP’s grand prize winner:

who won R10 000 cash and R6 000 for their school – was randomly drawn from the competition entries received by DRUM and our sister magazines, YOU, Huisgenoot and Move!. The winner is Sakhile Khoza (5), a Grade 1 learner from Takheleni Primary School in Matsulu in Mbombela, Mpumalanga. “I’m so surprised and shocked he won,” says his mom, Zodwa. “We plan to invest the money for his education,” she adds.
