So your insurance claim was rejected – now what? The Ombudsman is there to assist

If you’ve experienced it, you’ll know the rejection of an insurance claim can be quite distressing. You paid every month and thought you’d get that much needed help when you required it most – so now what?

Your insurer may reject your claim for a number of reasons but the good news is you can challenge the decision and submit a complaint against your short-term insurer to the Ombudsman for Short-Term Insurance (Osti) for investigation.

Osti is an independent, non-profit industry ombud scheme. When you need help investing a complaint against your insurer, the Ombud is there to help. The scheme provides an efficient and fair dispute resolution to help you with your insurance claim, or any policy complaints – and the service is free!

The truth is, there are many reasons why your insurer may reject your claim – and if you ensured your policy covers your need and you are still refused, you have the right to dispute it.

Osti offers assistance based on the law and what is fair in your circumstances.

Short-term insurance includes everything from motor, building, home contents, cellphone, travel and credit protection insurance, as well as commercial insurance for small businesses and small business owners (with a turnover of less than R35 million a year). While disability and funeral cover normally falls under long-term insurance, they may also be offered under a short term insurance licence – this will be clarified in your policy.

If you have a relevant claim, fight for your rights and seek help from Osti. They’ve made the process of submitting your claim easy – you can do it online or download an application form, complete it and email it back to Call the helpline on 011-726- 8900 or 0860-726-890 for assistance with completing the form.
