Pretoria - South Africans must cherish democracy and the fact that they can vote, says United Democratic Movement leader Bantu Holomisa.
"We are lucky in South Africa compared to other African countries because they change governments through the barrel of a gun," he said at the Electoral Commission's national results operations centre.
"We must nurture and cherish our democracy."
Holomisa said it was an honour for him to participate in elections.
The UDM was standing at 99 093 votes just after lunch.
The party in 2009 won 149 680 of the total votes, which was 0.85%.
"We are still waiting for votes to come in and hope that out of those we will consolidate," he said.
