Party members Tsietsi Mothibe and Kenny Monjomani sustained injuries and died during EFF door-to-door campaign at the Hostel in April and May respectively. Party leader Julius Malema was visiting the men's families and the site of their attacks on Tuesday when men from the hostel attacked his group.
News24 intern Hasan Variawa was hit by one of the attackers.
"They attacked everyone who was there. I tried to duck and I got hit on my neck. I fell down because my vision become blurry and I was dazed," he said.
"I had to get up and run away because they were still coming."
He said police used rubber bullets to disperse the attackers.
News24 reporter Mpho Raborife said her and other reporters hid behind a car while stun grenades were fired nearby.
Malema was told by police to leave the scene, however he was adamant that he stay because he wanted to know what the concerns were of the people at the hostel. He told them they needed to disarm the mob instead.
"At the moment, we are surrounded. The police are with us. Malema asked them to send two people to come and talk about the reasons why they are upset. It is very tense and it is not a good environment to be in."
Malema was currently talking to two of the men.
