Port Elizabeth – African National Congress chairperson Baleka Mbete has urged voters to head to the polls before they take care of their "bhabhalaz" on August 3.
Addressing community members from Ward 18 in Nelson Mandela Bay, Mbete urged them to remember to vote for the ANC.
"I am spreading this message everywhere I go. Before you go nurse and sort out your hangovers, go vote. After that you can go 'uyolungisa ibhabhalaza'," she said.
She was with Deputy Finance Minister Mcebisi Jonas and Nelson Mandela Bay Deputy Mayor Bicks Ndoni.
"We are here to thank you for your service and to tell you the ANC loves you. You must love it back," she urged.
Going door to door in the improvised area, she was told of housing issues.
Residents also told her that they had no access to electricity.
Resident Mbongeni Ndolomba, 59, said they were illegally connecting electricity from a nearby area.
"We told them we would not vote if they told us to disconnect."
He said they had no houses and that they were promised before every election that they would be given houses.
They loved the ANC, however, and would not vote for other parties.
"But we listen to the other parties because they feed us; they cook for us while you disappear."
Ndoni promised that the area's problems were being addressed.
Mbete acknowledged that it was hard living in the area.
