Port Elizabeth - A Gelvandale voter showed up at the voting station in army fatigues featuring the old and new South African flags, saying both represented his country.

Nelson Mandela Bay resident Craig Roman told News24 outside the Ward 10 voting station that he still had space on the jacket he was wearing for a third flag.

"This one [pointing at the old flag] represents the white people and the new one represents the black people. I'm wearing the old flag because it was never not my country, even then," he said.

He said now he wanted a flag to represent the coloured people, which he would put over his heart.

When asked what that flag would look like, he said: "Maybe something with someone sleeping after lunch or holding up a gun."

Earlier at the station, a livid Roman had been upset after he saw the Democratic Alliance's Mmusi Maimane visiting as an observer.

Living by the rules

He said even though they masked it as observing, the DA leader was shaking hands and taking selfies outside the station.

"It is not allowed. They should not be here. It's the rules. They should know the rules," he said.

He lived by rules, he said, and hated it when others broke them. Which was why, Roman said, he had lost his temper when a photographer took pictures of him at the voting station.

"If I see those pictures of me anywhere, I will go visit that photographer in his house. Does he know who I am? He did not ask me for permission. I will show him."

Even the police at the station where the minor altercation took place seemed wary of him.

This was because they knew who he was, Roman said.
