Durban – KwaZulu-Natal ANC treasurer Nomusa Dube-Ncube never had ambitions of becoming eThekwini metro mayor, the party said on Tuesday.

“At no stage do we develop our own ambitions. This manufactured story which came from the media was totally unfair and was seeking to divide the ANC,” KwaZulu-Natal ANC chairperson Sihle Zikalala told reporters in Durban.

He was speaking at an event where the party introduced its mayoral candidates for strategic municipalities.

During the process to nominate candidates for the local government elections, Dube-Ncube was rumoured to have been one of the candidates the party was considering as its mayoral candidate for the eThekwini metro.

Dube-Ncube is currently co-operative governance MEC in the province. She had been in local government for 16 years and never wanted to be eThekwini mayor.

“How can she have ambitions to go back and serve in local government when she has already served? The ANC can deploy anyone to any position. It can recall someone who is out of the country and assign them to a task.

“She has served in this city. If you grow and you are a person with ambitions, you don’t serve in one position.”

He said the ANC worked as a collective.

“We discussed this matter and we were satisfied that there was never such a thing,” said Zikalala.
