Maimane was speaking on a visit to the area on Freedom Day.

Addressing a crowd outside the local clinic, Maimane called Zuma a thief, referring to the president's alleged plans for a new plane "while the people of Zandspruit have to live in these horrific conditions".

Maimane said the people were sick and tired of the Zuma's lies.

"We are here to say, 'Jacob Zuma must take his lies and his ANC and go'," Maimane said.

As DA members of Zandspruit made their way through the informal settlement, some sang, "Mmusi our president, down with Zuma, down".

Looking at the piles of rubbish lining the streets, Maimane blamed Zuma and the ANC for the community's living conditions.

"How do they expect people to live like this? We need to change the conditions in Zandspruit."

Maimane said the people of Zandspruit were in need of service delivery.

One resident said their biggest problem in the area was a lack of electricity and water.

"We don't have clean drinking water at our houses and my children can't do their school work because there is no electricity," Thaba Ntla said.

Maimane said the country should not go back to the past.

"The only way to move forward in this country, is to vote this government out."
