Johannesburg - Tshwane Mayor Kgosientso Ramokgopa has expressed full confidence in mayor elect Thoko Didiza.

"I disembark the commanding heights of the capital city fully aware that more and better is yet to be done, but confident that we bequeath on the mayor elect Didiza, a solid and unwavering foundation to consolidate the rebuilding of a people’s capital," Ramokgopa said in a statement.

"Our delivery success is not my personal legacy, but the collective effort, guidance and support from national and provincial government, emanating from the ANC 2011 manifesto and reaffirmed and strengthened by the 2016 local government manifesto," he said.

Ramokgopa said that when he accepted the mayoral position he knew he would also accept a task to carry the baton forward.

"When I accepted the difficult task of leading the transformation agenda of rebuilding a capital city for our democratic country, I did so knowing that mine was equally a task to carry the baton from my predecessors and for those that will be called upon to carry it to its conclusion," he said.

He assured citizens that the metro was deploying its best efforts to ensure a seamless and uninterrupted delivery of services.

"What remains is our task... to mobilise the millions of our people in Gauteng and in the City of Tshwane in particular to vote for the ANC on August 3, and renew their mandate to continue with our quest to transform Tshwane into a liveable city," he said.

Widespread protest erupted in Tshwane after the ANC announced Didiza as its mayoral candidate. Five people have been killed and more than 50 injured.
