Port Elizabeth - National Freedom Party Nelson Mandela Bay leader Pastor Roderick Vencencie has urged party supporters in the area to remain positive.

This as the party waits to hear if they would be able to participate in the August 3 local government elections.

The NFP has officially been disqualified from contesting the 2016 local government elections after it failed to pay its registration fee to the Electoral Commission by the June 2 deadline.

The party has now approached the Constitutional Court in a bid to be allowed to participate.

Vencencie said they had told supporters to keep their spirits up.

"If the Constitutional Court rules against the party, then we won't participate in the elections. But they must remain positive, they mustn't give up hope," he said.

They would not throw in the towel until a verdict from the Constitutional Court came through, he said.

2 500 members

The party received 107 votes in Nelson Mandela Bay in the 2014 elections.

The regional leader said even with the upheaval in the party, the supporters remained faithful.

"We have about 2 500 members in Nelson Mandela Bay and they are not ready to give up on the party," he said.

Vencencie said the members had decided they would not vote at all if the party could not participate in the elections.

"They would rather not vote at all, they have told us. We have candidates in the Northern Areas and KwaNobuhle and other areas and they would rather not vote if they are not voting for them," he said.

He called on supporters to remain calm, whatever the outcome of the court case, which should be heard soon, he said.

It emerged last week that the party's national executive committee - led by Malikhaye Shelembe, Nhlanhla Khubisa, and Xolani Ndlovu - were responsible for making the R400 000 payment.

Ndlovu apparently sent the IEC a cheque, which bounced. He allegedly then paid the money after the deadline.
