No no-go areas identified ahead of vote - IEC

Pretoria - The IEC has not identified any no-go areas for elections day, and is working with security agencies to ensure the situation remains that way.

The Electoral Commission of SA (IEC) was meeting the security cluster on any concerns it had, and these were being assessed, chief electoral officer Mosotho Moepya told journalists in Centurion on Wednesday.

"We take appropriate steps to deal with those issues, and in this respect we don't have areas where, [as far as] we are concerned, are no-go areas. We take measures in advance to deal with those issues."

He said any difficulties on registration and election days were shared openly with the media.

IEC vice-chairperson Terry Tselane said the electoral process was a joint responsibility between the IEC, security agencies, and political parties.

The IEC did its best to contain disruptions and ensure elections were free and fair.

Verifying addresses

He said the violent protests in Tshwane last week were of great concern.

"We will continue talks with parties concerned and ensure that those kinds of challenges don't spill into the election process."

The IEC last week met the Economic Freedom Fighters to discuss statements by its leader Julius Malema that the 2014 elections in Alexandra, Johannesburg, were rigged.

Moepya described the meeting as “amicable and very fruitful”. He said the IEC was satisfied that the issues the party had raised were dealt with.

“There was an understanding that there are certain things that we need to attend to,” he said.

The IEC said it was doing all it could to comply with the Constitutional Court's order to verify addresses in Tlokwe.

About 5 000 voters visited registration points in the municipality last weekend to have their addresses verified.

Moepya said the matter of the National Freedom Party, which did not pay its deposits to register on time, was before the courts. It would comment once the process was concluded.

Moepya said 22 000 electoral officers were getting extensive training.

"We had the opportunity to review whether they had an understanding of the training, and from that point of view we are satisfied", he said.

The IEC was in contact with electoral officers in areas where there were problems.
