Durban – The South African Communist Party (SACP) has hit out at a Sunday newspaper report into political killings in KwaZulu-Natal.

The City Press using the contents of a leaked police report on the investigation, published a story focusing on the “fallout” between the SACP and the African National Congress (ANC) as a contributing factor in the spate of killings in which at least 12 ANC candidates and councillors have been murdered ahead of the local government elections.

The article and the report it was based on was “extremely worrying”, the SACP said in a statement.

“The contents attributed to a police investigative report apparently leaked to the City Press blaming the political killings and violence in KwaZulu-Natal Province to the so-called fallout between the SACP and the African National Congress is disgusting,” the party said.

“The undertone coming out of that report is scapegoating the Communist Party. The SACP condemns this in the strongest terms possible. We will not as the SACP fold our arms in the face of rebounding apartheid tactics to scapegoat our party and tarnish its name through media leaks from state investigative processes and institutions,” the statement read.

The party also called for the source of leaked police report to be investigated.

“The scapegoating of communists under apartheid served as a precursor to harassment and persecution the Communist Party,” it said.
