Port Elizabeth – Thank you, thank you, thank you, DA Kouga mayoral candidate Elza van Lingen said on Thursday.

The DA snatched the Eastern Cape’s Kouga municipality from the ANC in the local government elections, according to IEC results available on Thursday.

The party won 57.04% of the votes and the ANC 40.1%.

Van Lingen said she was absolutely pumped with adrenaline.

“We went to the electorate to say this is our plan. Now the voters have endorsed that plan, it is amazing,” she said.

She said waiting for the results had been stressful and winning the municipality was amazing.

The first order of business would be to hold a council meeting to appoint a speaker and officially elect a mayor.

But they would be going around thanking voters first, before assessing the municipality’s finances and staff.

“I want to say thank you, thank you, thank you to the voters. They are amazing.”

ANC provincial chairperson Sakhumzi Somyo said the loss was a blow to the party and he blamed it on the low voter turnout in the region.

He was confident that in other municipalities in the province where the party was struggling for support, it had “improved nicely”.

- The Kouga Local Municipality consists of nine towns, namely, Jeffreys Bay, Humansdorp, St Francis Bay, Cape St Francis, Oyster Bay, Patensie, Hankey, Loerie and Thornhill, as well as various smaller settlements and agricultural nodes.
