Tshwane unrest: Special army unit on standby

Pretoria - The army is believed to be on stand-by to intervene in violence-hit townships in and around Pretoria, Netwerk24 reported on Tuesday.

A meeting was underway on Tuesday afternoon at the National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (Natjoints) to discuss the possibility.

A source with first-hand knowledge of the talks said a special unit was on standby to assist the police, but a final decision has not yet been made.

The army cannot be deployed without the president informing the Speaker of Parliament of such a decision.

The ministers of justice, police, defence and state security are expected to address the media at 16:00 on Tuesday.
