We chose the right candidate in Mashaba - Maimane

Johannesburg – Democratic Alliance leader Mmusi Maimane on Monday dismissed claims that its mayoral candidate for Johannesburg, Herman Mashaba, was hard to control.

He ran a successful business and was the right man for the job, Maimane said during a Mandela Day event at the Othandweni women's shelter in Hillbrow, where he, Mashaba, and party members gave the women blankets and toiletries.

Earlier this month, Business Day reported that party insiders said it was a struggle to keep Mashaba on script, "so much so that a crack team had to be parachuted in from Cape Town a few weeks back to try salvage the campaign".

Maimane rejected this. He said he had met all the party’s mayoral candidates in Cape Town recently to find out if they were ready to assume leadership roles, should they get elected.

"That is nonsense, all of that is nonsense. I called all of our mayors together to discuss what government must look like. I sat down and asked them questions. It has nothing to do with training people about scripts. We chose the right candidate in Herman," he said.
