Cape Town - SA's award-winning sitcom Stokvel, recently nominated for a prestigious Rose D'Or international TV award for best sitcom, returns to SABC2 on March 30.

The fifth season of Stokvel re-introduces the country to the young professional couple, Mojo Khumalo (James Ngcobo), his beautiful wife, Lerata (Manaka Ranaka) and the vibrant world of their respective stokvels, institutions which have been a part of African culture for decades.

It's a place where friends meet for companionship, good times and a social way of saving money and the dynamic backdrop for the continuing activities of two stokvels in Diepkloof, Soweto.

In 2004, Stokvel became the only South African television show thus far to ever make the finals of The International Emmy Awards.

Rose d'Or Festival in Switzerland

It was also a nominee for the Best Sitcom at the Rose D'Or Awards for international television entertainment excellence in the same year.

In this year's Rose D'Or Awards, Stokvel is nominated in the sitcom category and is up against shows from Australia, Germany, Denmark, Italy, Polands and the UK (whose entrants include My Family).

The Rose d'Or Festival finals will be held in Lucerne, Switzerland from 2-6 May 2008.

Stokvel is created for SABC2 by Penguin Films, under the artistic direction of Roberta Durrant and Joe Mafela.

The new episodes of Stokvel will again be directed by Vusi Dibakwane, acclaimed director of the previous series.
