Fistfight at CD launch

Cape Town - SA punk band Fokofpolisiekar had to stop their performance at a CD launch for a while when a fight broke out between fans.

The group held the second launch of their new CD, Lugsteurings, in a packed Belgian Beer Pub in Stellenbosch on Wednesday.

Some concert-goers said far too many people had been allowed inside the venue.

"It was funny," Robert Fanner, one of the concert-goers, said. "They stopped the song in the middle and jumped from the stage to put an end to the fistfight.

"You just heard 'hey, hey, yes you!' from the microphone and the next moment some of the members jumped in to stop the fight."

Fanner said people started jumping up and down to the beat of the music in the packed pub and bumped against each other. "The place was more packed than the place in Nirvana's Smells like teen spirit music video."

Francois van Coke, lead singer of the band, claimed it was "nothing serious".

"Guys beat each other up in audiences these days. It happened at last week's launch as well."

Van Coke said the CD has been in stores for a mere two weeks, but fans are already singing along to the new songs.

"I just don't know why they want to fight."

Fokofpolisiekar will embark on a countrywide tour early next month to promote the album in Gauteng and North West.
