Cape Town - South African jazz legend Stompie Mavi died in Port Elizabeth on Thursday, after a long illness.

According to his wife, Phumeza Mavi, Stompie was first admitted to Livingstone Hospital on November 29 with double pneumonia and was later discharged.

"Since then he's been in and out of hospital. One thing that bothered him most was low blood pressure," she told News24 on Friday morning.

On December 27, he was re-admitted again and was discharged last Tuesday. "Things got worse at home and my husband refused to go back to hospital. He said he preferred to die at home," said Phumeza.

His wife called a private ambulance on Thursday morning to try and force him to go to hospital, where he died shortly after.

Mavi is survived by his wife, five children and his siblings. He'll be buried in KwaZakhele, Port Elizabeth, on January 26.
