Mafikizolo score at Samas

Cape Town - Popular band Mafikizolo and masked kwaito star Mzekezeke were the top winners at Saturday's South African Music Awards (Sama) held at the Sun City Superbowl.

Mafikizolo won awards for Best African Pop and Best Group for their song Ngihambanawe while Mzekezeke scooped the coveted Artist of the Year and Song of the Year awards for his song S'Guqa Ngamadolo.

Backstage star KB walked off with the award for Best R&B Album, but lost out to veteran Sibongile Khumalo in the Best Female Artist category.

Jazz legend Hugh Masekela won the Best Male Artist award.

Kabelo's Rebel with a Cause, earned him the award for Best Kwaito Music Album. The band Revolution's album The Journey was awarded the prize for Best-Selling Release.

Popstars band, 101, and Idols winner, Heinz Winckler, lost out to Boo! in the Best Pop Album category.

Other winners included the queen of gospel Rebecca Malope - Best African Gospel Album for Iyahamba Lenqola; McCoy Mrubata -Best South African Traditional Jazz Album for Face The Music; Melanie Lowe and Ezra Lingeveldt - Best Single Award for Cabin Fever and Phuzekhemisi - Best Maskandi Album for Amakhansela.
