Mansfield leaves breakfast FM

2010-07-12 11:39

Cape Town – Morning radio stalwart Jeremy Mansfield ended a 13-year run on the Rude Awakening breakfast show on 94.7 Highveld Stereo on Monday.

In an earlier press statement Mansfield said: "I've thoroughly enjoyed my time with the show. Management and the Primedia Broadcasting Board have asked me to stay active in other areas of the radio business, which I am looking forward to."

Mansfield also told TheMediaOnline that he would be joining the Nelson Mandela Foundation's bike ride to Cape Town on July 13 to raise awareness for Mandela Day.

Twitter was flooded with dozens of messages from fans on Monday.

Nielspm wrote: "Goodbye to Jeremy Mansfield. A real legend that will be missed by the whole of Jozi. Thanks for the memories. You made difference."

Marieliscious offered a more emotional message: "Had a tearful drive to work this morning. Goodbye Jeremy Mansfield. You've touched our lives in so many ways!"

The show will continue being run by Mansfield’s team, including Darren Simpson and Samantha Cowen.

Mansfield started his broadcasting career at Rhodes University in Grahamstown, moving on to Capitol 604 in Durban. In 1990, Mansfield joined 702 Talk Radio, and in 1996 he finally moved to Highveld Stereo, launching what was to be the hugely popular Rude Awakening breakfast show.

In 2009, Mansfield announced that he had been diagnosed with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia, for which he announced he was undergoing treatment.

In 2010 Mansfield was cast in Disney’s local release of Toy Story 3 as the voice of Lifer.

It's time for a change on highveld, I think everyones tired of hearing the same morning show for 13 years in a row. I only wish they would get rid of that painfil Sam and dickhead Shrimpson as well.

  • DC - 2010-07-12 12:21

well done Jeremy. Thank you for the wonderful contributions you have made to peoples lives.Yes, you had the platform, but unlike many other DJ's, you used that platform to do good & the help charities. You will still be remembered, especially when we hear your creation, The Xmas Wishlist, on the radio.

  • Kevin - 2010-07-12 12:22

good riddance! He was LONG past his best-by date

  • vleis - 2010-07-12 12:26

Now I can install a radio in my car again....I removed it when I got fed up with Jeremy and Gilman abusing the East rand people.

  • Freddy - 2010-07-12 12:29

Never liked him, wont miss him. as for the rest of his "team"......... Go Jacaranda

  • Regz - 2010-07-12 12:35

the show is not going to be the same without him. He made the morning traffic enjoyable.

  • Debbie - 2010-07-12 12:37

When my husband left for work at around 6ma every morning i would kiss him goodbye and turn over and turn on the radio to listen to my "other husband". Jem, for 13 years you have been the other man in my bedroom and now I am going to miss you so much but i wish you all the luck and happiness in your future ventures. I know everytime we hear about you fom now on it will be because you have changed something else for the better. Take it easy and remember to look after yourself too and try catch up on some sleep. xx

  • Laurie - 2010-07-12 12:37

Jeremy you are going to be missed like hell! Sorry but Darren not the person to take your place we need someone mature

  • Morven Hay - 2010-07-12 12:39

From 1999-2006, I lived in Johannesburg and I thoroughly enjoyed The Rude Awakening. Jeremy Mansfield is a born entertainer and presented a fantastic show that I greatly missed when I returned to the UK.

  • Lidie - 2010-07-12 12:39

You will be missed Jeremy. I drove to work every morning listening to you. Living in Perth for past 2 years and still listens sometimes you will be missed, Good luck Mate God bless

We are going to miss you Jeremy, What is going to happen to the Christmas Wishlist. It will never ever be the same without you. Best of luck, I know it will be a huge sucess.

  • Jelly - 2010-07-12 12:56

Oh Jem, why oh why do you have to abandone us?? Don't know who I am going to listen to going forward coz it just won't be the same without you! P.S I nearly rolled my car this morning when you let the cat out of the bag that YOU are actually Simphiwe!! I never knew that and never picked up on it in all the years I have listened to your show:-)

Anyhoo, all the best going forward. You are a mountain of a man with the biggest heart I have ever heard off. Farewell my friend.

  • Ashamed - 2010-07-12 12:57

To J hope u only the best for the future, to all u who had nothing nice to say or any thing decent or positive to bring to the table obviously had a hateful upbrining without morals, love or manners shame on u !

  • Rudie - 2010-07-12 12:57

Shame, vleis....maybe you should move away from the Eand Rand to a part of Johanesburg less third-world?

  • Lewsi - 2010-07-12 12:58

Good luck Jeremy, but where's Paul Rotherham? I havent heard him much lately? Wont be listening to Sam and Darren, prefer John Robbie.

  • BAL - 2010-07-12 13:00

He left 5 years to late !DARREN SCOTT RULES ANYWAY !

  • Barry - 2010-07-12 13:04

Jeremy is actually the person who should've stayed, with the rest of his team buggering off. As entertaining as they were, one gets tired of all the "pretend-it's-all-not-scripted" blabbering going on.

  • james - 2010-07-12 13:05

He was fantastic and his retirement a loss to decent, intelligent radio. For those with a low iq, don't worry, you still have Jacaranda.

  • SteveD - 2010-07-12 13:05

We're not happy Jerome, we are NOT happy. Vleis, you are an @ss!! You could have changed radio stations or did it not occur to you East Rand dudes to to do that?? Figures!!

  • Brian - 2010-07-12 13:05

Cheers Jezza... always funny, always contraversial... Hope you still keep involved with the Xmas Wish List big guy - the work you and your team have done was ground breaking. I hope we still get to hear you on the radio occasionally - someone intelligent has to stir k@k in the future. End of an era.

  • Leigh-Ann - 2010-07-12 13:05

Thanks for all the laughs and tears Jeremy and for making our trips to work a little funnier each day. Thanks for the great work that you did to help others. Hope we'll either hear you on the radio or see you on TV soon. May GOD bless you abundantly!

  • Lorna - 2010-07-12 13:10

Well Jeremy / Simphiwe - This Gran is really going to miss you. Maybe you could present the finale "Christmas wish". All the best to you and Jackie and thank you for your "entertaining over all these years"

  • Rita - 2010-07-12 13:12

Jeremy you have no idea how many people's lives you have touched. I read your interview and I also was heart broken on that little dying just when the wish was granted. Thank you for bringing such joys to our morning drive but unfortunately Sam & Darren will never do justice to the show and it will close down sooner than u think cos no one is going to listen them - they don't have what it takes to run a show. Good luck for the future & God Bless.

  • ir8m8 - 2010-07-12 13:23

although i agree at times jem was too much to bear and listening to gilman just was a worse decision for me, but no matter how he said what he said, he taught us Jozi's that it was okay to laugh at ourselves and it was okay to get to gether and have a jol as long as we remembered the less fortunate (most things that the RAW team do are done with a charity in mind), and it this part that i will miss. As for Whakhead taking over, well my kids will love it, i may however find myself buying an Ipod.

  • Richie - 2010-07-12 13:24

Get Darren Scott back ... He is the man!

  • LAURA - 2010-07-12 13:26

YOU DID SO MUCH GOOD FOR JOZI PEOPLE DONT BE LOST TO US FOREVER STAY IN TOUCH

  • PAR - 2010-07-12 13:28

You have made us laugh and made us cry. The world would be a better place if more people had a heart as big as yours. I pray for a miracle when it comes to your health. Please move Alex-J up a slot - he is the only one left worth listening to.

  • nency raboroko - 2010-07-12 13:32

we will miss u, good luck and all the best.honestly the are few people to lift others people they way you did. thanks you are my hero.

  • Gus - 2010-07-12 13:33

From now on it will only be JR on my radio, Will mis ja Jeremy. sad to see you be compared with Scott.

  • oeps - 2010-07-12 13:46

Jeremy thanx for all the time you spent with us, you were there for the birth of both my children, you were in hospital, when they were ill. Sad to see you go, you have a heart as big as the earth and have meant so much to so many. May God bless you in whatever you take on in the future. Sorry, Whackhead doesn't do it for me. Going to switch to Jacaranda in the mornings.

  • Gaz - 2010-07-12 13:56

A good Kingswood College boy who has never forgotten his Grahamstown roots and allegance to old school and school mates. All the best big guy. Show your face at the next K Day mate, we still do...and then limp home on the Sunday afternoon.... :)

  • camelthief - 2010-07-12 13:58

a good man who turned out to be a bigger and deeper person than we first thought. go well china!

  • THE MAN - 2010-07-12 14:10

time to get someone on the show that the masses will find attractive, maybe get someone from YFM and start playing some more african and R&B tunes in da morning in 94.7

  • Like I said - 2010-07-12 14:15

Yip. Time to go. |The whole morning team needs to go. Predictable and boring. Please no more of Joffe's fake laugh. Thank goodness for Gareth Cliff and Darren Scott. They won me over years ago..

  • Kenno - 2010-07-12 14:19

Finally !! that ego and name dropping was way out of hand anyway! Not gonna miss you or the endless boring stories about your cookery skills and your wife. Sam like you though!!

  • Bateleur - 2010-07-12 14:32

Sorry to see you go JM. Unfortunately it is always the good ones that go. I have to agree with "ANT" though, the one that should be going is the very very painfull Samantha Cowen.

  • Bored - 2010-07-12 14:37

Long past his sell-bye date. But if Highveld think that Samantha and Simpson can carry the show, they're in for a rude shock, I think. Prank calls and gossip. Wow. Axe them all and get someone completely new in.

  • DEBBIE - 2010-07-12 14:44

Thank you for your outstanding work with the Christmas Wishes. I will miss your great work.

  • Bones - 2010-07-12 14:45

At last,, since your attack on the fireworks display on air... carrying on like Debora Patta, i stopped listening to the RUDE awakening, oh and the attempt to copy jacaranda's angels, with tears and all... eish cant listen to that mulch, when im trying to get positive for the day..

  • Cynful - 2010-07-12 15:12

Jem, what can we say! It feels as if someone in the family has left the country! It hurts. Sorry, but Whackhead has gotten such an attitude lately that I probably won't be listening to the show any longer.....sorry Sam, Paul and the rest. Same as I do not listen to Pabi in the afternoons. She irritates me sh1tless! Jem I hope you and Jacqui will be so blessed in your future. Please don't be a stranger and PLEASE help out when the time comes for the Christmas Wish list. We need you to help us through it.
May God bless you and hold you in his hand forever!
    Lotz and lotza luv, always!

  • lee - 2010-07-12 15:17

Sad day....will miss him especially those Christmas Wish Lists....that man had such a good heart & i hope that he has taught everyone out there that we all are on this earth to do something good for another, regardless of how we might annoy or irritate people...

  • Malcolm - 2010-07-12 15:18

Jeremy when I first listened to you on 94.7 I thought you were rude and crude with some of the jokes, however over the years I have grown to love your kindness to your fellow human being and also made my day listening to you on the way to work. You brightened up my day as I am sure you did with so many people. My wife and I will sadly miss you and I really can't imagine 94.7 without you.I wish you all the best in your new ventures whatever they are and blessings and love for the future.
    Malcolm and Babs

  • Lynn - 2010-07-12 15:21

Please, please, don't replace Jeremy with Alex Jay! Bring back Paul Rotherham or better still, Revan John.We need controversy and brain food, not stupid jokes and charity. This is Jo'burg. We need some satire and some politically incorrect humour to get us up in the morning.

  • Collitjies - 2010-07-12 15:26

JM was 94.7 what will it be called now? I will keep on listening to RAW until it becomes my turn to leave our wonderful country in a body bag that is. All the very very best Jeremy I really hope your new position will be as well accepted as 94.7
