Rail corridor gets the nod

Cape Town - Cabinet has approved the R8.6bn Moloto Rail Corridor Development Initiative after considering the feasibility study conducted on the project.

"A project implementation and management office will be established by the department of transport to take the project forward," government communications head Themba Maseko told a post-Cabinet briefing at Parliament on Thursday.

The project would be implemented jointly with the Mpumalanga provincial government at a cost of R8.6 billion.

It would include rail, road and transfer facilities.

An environmental impact assessment study would be undertaken shortly and all affected municipalities would have to update their integrated development plans and integrated transport plans to ensure alignment with this initiative, Maseko said.
