Johannesburg - The SA National Road Agency (Sanral) would take on 1 628km of roads in Limpopo, it said in a statement on Sunday.

The province requested that the roads be incorporated into Sanral's network to improve road infrastructure, Sanral said in a statement.

"The intervention in Limpopo is particularly vital, because of its booming mining industry and its strategic agricultural sector, which both need, over and above rail connections, an excellent road infrastructure," spokesperson Vusi Mona said.

Sanral was confident it was up to the task but admitted funding constraints could limit its ability to complete the road upgrades speedily. Investment from the private sector could help to improve this.

The National Budget last week allocated R24bn over the medium term for the design, construction and maintenance of Sanral roads, but this did not meet the increase in roads under Sanral's control.

"Because of the backlog in maintenance on the provincial roads, Sanral has to spend up to three times more to rehabilitate and do preventive maintenance work on these newly added roads," Mona said.
