Telkom CEO puts fraud charges ‘behind him’

Johannesburg - The chief executive officer of telecommunications company Telkom [JSE:TKG] has welcomed a decision to drop car fraud charges against him.

Sipho Maseko faced fraud charges for allegedly driving a car with false number plates.

Another driver, who bought a car previously owned by Maseko, allegedly received fines linked to a newer car with the same licence plate.

But Bloomberg reported on Friday that the state dropped charges against Maseko in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court in Sandton.

“Mr Maseko welcomes the decision,” Telkom said in an emailed statement to Fin24.

“The resolution of this matter now allows Mr Maseko to put the issue behind him,” said the company.

The Star newspaper reported in July last year that Maseko was part of a Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) investigation into car licence cloning.

A JMPD spokesperson told Fin24 on Friday that the case would have been handed over to the South African Police Service (SAPS) or the prosecuting authority.

A Telkom spokesperson told Fin24 that it was the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) which dropped the charges against Maseko.

However, at this stage it is unclear why the charges were dropped. At the time of writing NPA spokespersons were not reachable for comment.
