Johannesburg - Electronic payments company Visa is launching a service in South Africa that quickens the online checkout process.
Dubbed ‘Visa Checkout’, the offering limits online shoppers from having to submit large amounts of detail every time they shop online using their credit or debit cards.
Using the technology, consumers enter their shipping and payment information once and they don’t have to re-enter that data again when shopping online at merchants who offer Visa Checkout.
When seeing a Visa Checkout button, users of the service enter their username and password to make a payment.
“We are thus very excited to announce that consumers in South Africa can now sign up for Visa Checkout at www.visacheckout.com and start using the service to shop at the international merchants in North America and Australia that already support Visa Checkout,” said Visa in a statement.
“Over the next few months, we will work with local bank and merchant partners to on-board local merchants to offer this service,” said the company.
The service was first unveiled in the July 2014 in the US, Canada and Australia, and now the service is coming to South Africa as part of a second stage roll-out in 16 countries.
Over three million accounts have been created since its inception, according to Visa.
Meanwhile, rival electronic payments company Mastercard also has a similar service to Visa Checkout called ‘Masterpass’.
Last year, Standard Bank was the first SA bank to offer a digital wallet powered by MasterPass via the Standard Bank MasterPass app for Apple, Android and BlackBerry.
