Parliament calls for public submissions on land expropriation without compensation

Cape Town - A committee of Parliament investigating whether sections of the Constitution must be amended to facilitate expropriation of land without compensation wants to hear what South Africans have to say.

In February the ANC and the EFF voted in favour of a motion proposing that Parliament's Joint Constitutional Review Committee investigate mechanisms through which land can be expropriated without compensation. The DA voted against the motion.

The committee on Friday called for written public submissions around the issue of whether section 25 of the Constitution, and any other sections, need to be changed.

"As part its constitutional obligation to facilitate public participation, the committee invites written submissions from all stakeholders on the necessity of and mechanisms for expropriating land without compensation," it said in a media statement. Members of the public can also indicate whether they are interested in making oral presentations before the committee.

As Fin24 previously reported, the committee has 24 members, and is co-chaired by ANC MPs Vincent Smith and Musawenkosi Nzimande. Some of its notable members include EFF chief whip and deputy president Floyd Shivambu, and former prosecutor Glynnis Breytenbach of the DA.

The closing date for written submissions and requests for oral presentation is May 31.
