Cape Town – Animal activists in China say they have discovered a mass grave filled with a 100 stray dogs, that were buried alive.

There were a number of puppies present in the grave according to a report on the Huffington Post.

The activists say that the dogs were regarded as vermin by the locals in Azuiqi, an area in Inner Mongolia.

It is believed that that the dogs suffered immensely before they finally died from suffocation.

Only four dogs survived and were rescued by the animal campaigners.

The Chinese Animal Protection Network says that the hole was 6m deep and had been dug with heavy machinery.

It is for this reason that the activists argue that the hole may have been created by government officials.

Many of the dogs suffered severe injuries when they were dumped in the hole.

Campaigner Li Yeh told media outlets that the protection network had received information from the public that a number of dogs were dumped in a grave, but they were still alive.

Yeh says that when they arrived at the site the hole was filled with sand and as the campaigners started to dig, they could hear the dogs crying and whimpering.

The animal group has called the act barbaric and heartless and suspect the local Chengguan police are the culprits.
