London - British police are hunting a wolf that's on the loose after five of the animals escaped from a zoo enclosure.

Colchester Zoo in southeastern England says two of the timber wolves had to be shot because they were "wild animals... in an unpredictable situation".

One wolf was hit with a tranquilizer dart and recaptured, and a fourth returned to its pen. A fifth is missing and police are helping the zoo find it.

The zoo said the wolves escaped on Tuesday morning. It said it did not know how the fence to their pen became damaged despite being checked on a daily basis.
