Cape Town – Afriforum has welcomed Agang SA’s position against fracking.

The party made a statement on Monday, denouncing hydraulic fracturing in the Karoo or anywhere else in South Africa.

Agang based its decision against fracking on evidence that the practice will have devastating consequences on the environment regardless of where it is used in the world.

The newly formed political party argued that it will endeavour to have a stronger position on the issue, a position that is aligned with the Anti-Fracking Alliance.

Julius Kleynhans, head of environmental affairs for AfriForum, said that he welcomed a political party that was prepared to take a stand against fracking on the eve of elections.

Kleynhans noted that AfriForum and the Treasure the Karoo Action Group (TKAG) are looking forward to see action from Agang on this policy in the future.

AfriForum criticised the ANC’s position on fracking and noted that various international coutries have denounced the practice for its negative impact on the environment.

“Political influence should focus on the well-being of the community, sustainable economic solutions and a freemarket system in which private businesses builds the economy. Irresponsible decisions, such as that of the ANC regarding fracking, achieve the opposite”, Kleynhans said.
