Johannesburg - Five suspected rhino poachers have been arrested in Limpopo, police said on Friday.

Police stopped their car on the road between Modjadjiskloof and Polokwane on Thursday afternoon, spokesperson Ronel Otto said.

"During the search members confiscated a .303 rifle and 12 rounds of ammunition, a silencer, an axe, saw, and hunting knives.

"Several bags of muti allegedly to be used by the suspects were also found in the vehicle."

The three Mozambican nationals and two South Africans were charged with conspiracy to poach rhino and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

They were expected to appear in the Polokwane Magistrate's Court on Monday.
