Cape Town - The Council for Geoscience has been flooded with queries about tremors that were felt in Pretoria on Monday evening.

"We have received lots of queries from a wide range of areas and my team is working on it," manager of the seismology unit at the Council for Geoscience, Michelle Grobbelaar, told News24.

"We will have a conclusion on the epicentre and magnitude in a few hours," she said.

People took to Twitter to describe the tremors.

Eyewitness News reporter, Mandy Wiener, tweeted "tremors seems to have been felt most strongly in Pretoria and northern parts of Joburg".

@LecindaWeiss tweeted "felt a strong tremor in Radiokop near Clearwater Mall. Windows were rattling. What a weird feeling!"

Gauteng Weather tweeted that the tremors happened at 21:19 and that there were no reports of injuries or structural damage.

In mid-November an earthquake which registered a magnitude of four on the Richter Scale hit the Gauteng area.

Tremors are a result of stress build-up in the earth's crust. When the stress exceeds a certain point, it is released in the form of a quake, usually on a geological fault line.
