Cape Town – A locally developed mobile application will allow for the monitoring of wildfires has been launched.

The CSIR announced on Wednesday that its Meraka Institute had produced the Advanced Fire Information Service (Afis) application that provides for the real-time monitoring and detection of wild fires.

The application could potentially boost fire response times and reduce the impact of blazes, particularly those in isolated areas.

The Meraka Institute partnered with the departments of science and technology, environmental affairs, agriculture, forestry and fisheries as well as the South African National Space Agency.

The agency is focused on the developed on mobile solutions as it is expected to be the strongest growth area for people accessing the internet.

Delivery of cyber solutions is a key driver for the institute.

"We have recently reorganised our activities into four competence areas and two special units, focussing on cyber infrastructure and we managed to attract very good leadership for those areas," Laurens Cloete, executive director of CSIR Meraka Institute told News24 in 2012.

The location-based application gives fire managers and farmers a tool to receive fire information and is available on iOS and Android platforms.

The satellite-based app also provides information on the condition of the vegetation as well historical data on fire danger and location.
