Cape Town – The City of Cape Town is seeking legal opinions about the growing popularity of e-cigarettes.

According to the province the Health Department is concerned about the popularity of the cigarettes and have received a number of complaints form those who do not smoke the cigarette.

Councillor Benedicta Van Minnen, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Health said there is still debate on how safe the e-cigarette are.

There is also debate about letting smokers smoke the cigarette indoors since it lets out vapour rather than smoke.

The National Health Department legal team said that electronic cigarettes are not entirely part of the definition that defines tobacco products.

E-cigarettes do not contain tobacco but rather vaporised nicotine making the current legislation inept to deal with issues around the new cigarette.

The health department is planning a review to incorporate the e-cigarettes in South Africa’s legislation.
