Cape Town – Chile’s Pacific shore in the North was hit with a 6.7 magnitude earthquake on Sunday and according to officials 100 000 people were briefly evacuated.

The original report suggested that Chile was struck by a 7.0 magnitude quake but it was later revised. The quake hit the shoreline at 18:16. The epicentre was 60km from the Iquique region.

A number of aftershocks followed registering between 4.9 and 5.2 in magnitude.

The Chilean navy noted that there was a possibility of a small tsunami in the towns of Arica and Tocopilla.

It was for this reason that officials urged people to evacuate.

80 000 people were evacuated from the Tarapaca region, 3 000 in the Arica and Parinacota region and 22 000 in the Antofagasta region.
