Harare - Zimbabwean police on Monday arrested a Chinese national at Harare airport who was found with 100kg of raw and processed ivory in his possession.

The 34-year-old was found to have 17 pieces of raw ivory, said Caroline Washaya-Moyo of the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority.

"The current seizure and arrest should send the proper message to would-be offenders," Washaya-Moyo told dpa.

No date was yet set for the man's court appearance.

The arrest comes as Zimbabwe boosts its efforts to stop the illegal trafficking of wildlife related goods.

About 300 elephants and animals from other species were have recently died of cyanide used by poachers at the Hwange National Park.

"To date, 12 people have been arrested and four people have since been convicted and sentenced," said Washaya-Moyo said.
