Clean-up of US uranium plant expected to take decades more

Piketon - US energy officials say the clean-up of a Cold War-era uranium plant in the state of Ohio is expected to take another three decades or more.

The Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant in Piketon, located about 100km south of Columbus, produced enriched uranium until it ceased operations in 2001.

Authorities had aimed to finish decommissioning and decontamination work at the facility by 2024. But Rob Portman, a member of Congress monitoring the issue, said on Tuesday that the target range for cleaning up the site is now between 2044 and 2052.

The clean-up employs more than 1 800 people and provides some of the best-paying jobs in a pocket of high unemployment. Last year, hundreds of layoffs were threatened until Congress provided a last-minute infusion of funding.
