Cape Town – New recordings on the earth has shown that in the last 13 years there has been 26 nuclear scale blasts that has been caused by asteroids.

According to research done by the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organisation these explosions were the equivalents of a blast created by a nuclear warhead.

According to a report on Sky News one of the blasts was as powerful as the nuclear bomb that razed Hiroshima.

The Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organisation uses a number of global sensors to monitor nuclear explosions.

Luckily most of these explosions happened high in the Earth’s atmosphere and as a result no major damage was inflicted on the Earth’s surface.

Scientists argue that this research illustrates the Earths vulnerability to any sort of threat from space.

According to Ed Lu, a former astronaut, there are a number of asteroids that have the potential to destroy major cities. These asteroids have been identified by a number of space observatories.

In recent times the most dangerous blast to hit the earth happened in Siberia in 1908. The blast yielded from 5 000 to 15 000kt of TNT.

Hiroshima’s blast yielded only 15kt of TNT.

The Siberian asteroid flattened 1 994 square kilometres of land
