San Salvador - Authorities in El Salvador have begun evacuating an area around the Chaparrastique volcano after the peak shot a cloud of gas and ash about 5km into the air.

The country's Environment Ministry says the eruption occurred early on Sunday.

The spokesperson for El Salvador's Red Cross says evacuations have been ordered for inhabitants living within about 3km of the peak.

Spokesperson Carlos Lopez Mendoza says there have been no reports of injuries, despite a "quite strong explosion" at the peak.

The 2 129m volcano is located about 145km east of San Salvador, the capital. It last erupted in 1976.

San Miguel is one of the country's largest cities and is located 50km from the volcano.
