Cape Town – Twenty three members of the public have raised concerns about environmental destruction and noise pollution after a proposal to realign the runway at the Cape Town International Airport.

The Cape Times reports that twenty three people raised concerns about the proposed plans in the final scoping report by the deadline on Friday.

The report, which is available online, has highlighted several environmental issues and has recommended seven specialist studies to be carried out.

According the report atmospheric emissions from aircraft could potentially increase and communities currently unaffected by airport noise could experience an increase in noise levels.

Members of the public also raised concerns about vegetation and wetlands east of the airport and the potential impact of earthworks on groundwater, animals, and birds.

Recommended specialist studies include air quality, noise and vibrations, freshwater and terrestrial ecology, as well as hydrology.

The realignment of the runway is set to bring numerous benefits to the airport, which is managed by the Airports Company of South Africa (ACSA).

These include the growth of air traffic into Cape Town which will result in spinoffs for tourism and economic activity.
