Johannesburg - The case of a man arrested for possession of more than one ton of perlemoen has been postponed by the Ventersburg Magistrate's Court, Free State police said on Tuesday.

"The case was postponed to Thursday for the bail application," police spokesperson Malebo Khosana said.

Francois Fouche would remain in custody until then. Khosana said the abalone weighed 1 180kg and had a street value of R2m.

Fouche, 36, was arrested on Sunday around 08:30 on the N1 between Ventersburg and Winburg, after the Welkom Flying Squad received information that the car was transporting abalone.

He was driving from Port Elizabeth to Johannesburg.
