New York - The Wildlife Conservation Society has introduced a herd of endangered flare-horned markhor to its Wild Asia exhibit at the Bronx Zoo.

These impressive creatures are flare-horned markhors, a species of wild goat native to the mountainous regions of Afghanistan, India and Pakistan.

While the endangered animals are a rare site in the wild, visitors of the Bronx Zoo in New York can now take a close look at these magnificent creatures known for their large twisted horns.

Only males grow these impressive horns that can reach lengths up to 1.6m.

This herd consists of three adult males, several females and their offspring. The International Union for Conservation of Nature says that fewer than 2 500 animals remain in the wild, as their thick fur and horns are a prized trophy for poachers.
