Johannesburg - A new gunfire detection system installed in the Kruger National Park will help track potential rhino poachers, the Saturday Star reported.

The product "ShotSpotter" was initially developed by Californian company SST Inc to alert United States of America police to incidents of gunfire.

Microphones were reportedly planted in undisclosed areas of the park, as part of its pilot project.

When a shot is fired, the origin of the sound would be triangulated and sent to the service provider in the US, the newspaper reported.

The park would be alerted of the sound's co-ordinates within 30 seconds.

The system was able to detect sound as far as 3km away.

Otch Otto, a former United Nations peacekeeper and soldier, told the Saturday Star poachers were skilful at navigating the bush.

"You can't win this war with helicopters and drones, the bush is too dense."
