Cape Town - A US tattoo artist is making world headlines for tattooing his dog according to an Instagram posting, while the animal was under anaesthesia following a medical procedure.

Mistah Metro is a Brooklyn tattoo artist who tattooed his pit bull's right shoulder and then captioned the post as “one of the many reasons my dog is cooler than yours”.

According to a report on the Huffington Post site the pit bull had its spleen removed and while under anaesthesia the doctor allowed the tattoo artist to ink the dog.

After the original posting various people and organisations came out in condemnation of the post, to the point that Metro then had to remove the post.

Later though another account came out with the same picture and with a caption reading “some people just don’t appreciate anything! It’s an ANIMAL with a tattoo”.

In New York tattooing a pet is not illegal though it is frowned upon by animal advocates.

Tattooing an animal is only condoned by the ASPCA for identification purposes. According to the ASPCA the practice is done to prevent unnecessary surgeries and can only be done by a licensed veterinary technician.

The tattoo is very small, has a specific purpose and done while the animal is under anaesthesia.

Tattooing an animal for enjoyment and vanity is something the ASPCA does don’t support according to a statement made by the ASPCA on the Huffington Post.
