ONE rhino died and two others were wounded after poachers darted and dehorned them in Hluhluwe Game Reserve on Monday afternoon.

The three white rhinos were found on Monday, pushing the total number of rhino poached in KwaZulu-Natal to 75 so far this year.

Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife spokesperson Musa Mntambo said all three rhinos had had their front horns removed and two had survived the ordeal.

“We suspect the rhinos were darted. One was found dead, but the other two were alive and we took them to the boma where they were attended to by the vet.”

He said they had had fears that one of these would also die, but both rhinos were doing well yesterday.

Mntambo said 63 of the rhinos poached in KZN were white and 12 were black.

“So far, there have been 45 arrests of people believed to be connected to poaching and 20 firearms have been seized,” he said.

Mntambo said their anti-poaching unit had helped keep the number of rhinos poached down — without the unit, the number of animals poached would have been well above 200.

“We are offering a reward that could reach R1 million if people are able to give us information that leads to the arrest of poachers,” he said
